We are delighted to have won the commission to design and manufacture two centrepiece bespoke chandeliers and wall lights for world famous hotel, the Hilton Park Lane, Mayfair, London.
Now on full view, the two grand feature chandeliers create a blaze of light in the Wellington Ballroom, where they have been installed as part of a major refurbishment of the Hilton's celebrated Ballroom Floor.
The design brief for the new bespoke chandeliers focussed on a fresh, glamorous contemporary look, inspired by the original groundbreaking modern style of this iconic 1960's hotel.
Martin Huxford responded with a dynamic modern design, featuring a dazzling multitude of vertical uprights and shades, supported by offset criss crossing horizontals, all hand finished in warm tones of satin brass. Each chandelier displays a cloud of 78 sparkling lights.
The Design Process
The design of the extraordinarily complex chandeliers evolved from a series of pen sketches by Martin, progressing to a maquette cardboard model, carefully handmade to scale in the Sussex workshop. With the design agreed, detailed computer 3D CAD drawings, showing every precise angle and contour were produced.
The dramatic scale of the chandeliers at just under two metres long by two metres tall, created interesting challenges in the workshop. Over 50 metres of solid brass tube, and 150 metres of wiring cable were used.
Four bespoke wall lights designed to complement the chandeliers, complete the new feature lighting for the Wellington Ballroom.
As the first Hilton hotel to open in 1963, the groundbreaking modern design and large scale of the building overlooking Hyde Park quickly established the hotel as a landmark destination. The large Ballrooms in particular attracted a rich cast of celebrity visitors, from heads of state to film stars.
"This has been a wonderful opportunity to design and make two outstanding new chandeliers for the famous Hilton Park Lane Hotel. It was exciting to work on such a large scale." Martin Huxford
